Always Loved the Look of Shutters?
Shutter and Blinds Installation Tips
Previously, shutters were used to protect windows against inclement weather, in addition to providing a barrier against the wind and cold. However, with today’s modern windows they are thicker and better insulated, which means shutters are not necessary, however, they are still attractive additions in addition to blinds installation. Installing DIY shutters is not as hard as most people think, however, it is important to use the right type of shutters.
The process for installing shutters does vary slightly, depending if they are interior or exterior shutters. When installing exterior ones, it is important you first carefully measure the length, height of your windows before choosing which shutters will be suitable for your window space. Make sure you measure to the outer edges of window sills in order to get the right measurements, then simply choose the shutters which can accommodate these measurements.
If you or your builder are intending to make DIY shutters from scratch, then you will need to buy the right wood for the job, so only choose wood which is resistant to water and rot, like pressure treated wood or cedar. Otherwise, it is advisable to use materials like vinyl or aluminum. Should you decide to buy a kit, it is more than likely all the hardware needed will be included in the kit, otherwise, you may have to buy the hardware separately.
It is vital you purchase the right hardware, and like the wood, the hardware must be resistant to water, rot and corrosion. Stainless steel or galvanized steel will be your best option with regard to exterior applications. Resistance to water damage is not as important for interior applications, although condensation sometimes does build up around window, which results in damage being done to the hardware.
